Eligibility Requirements

For the safety of both the donor and the recipient, every volunteers must follow the eligibility requirements prior to donating blood. People may not be eligible to donate blood if they have (but not limited to):

  • Returned from deployment to Iraq/Afghanistan/Thailand/Philippines in the past 12 months. Taking malaria prophylaxis is not a reason for a donation deferral.
  • Returned from an area north of Seoul, South Korea within the past 24 months to include the DMZ Tour
  • Lived in Europe for 6 months or longer (cumulative) from 1980-1996 or lived in the U.K. for 3 months or longer (cumulative) from 1980-1996
  • Spent time in Eastern or Western Europe (to include the U.K.) from 1980-present which adds up to five years.
  • Donated whole blood in the past 56 days.
  • Received a body piercing (excluding ear piercing) within the past 12 months.
  • Received a tattoo or permanent makeup outside of the United States within the past 12 months. For tattoos received within the United States each individual state must be evaluated on a case by case basis to determine eligibility.
  • Received a blood product transfusion within the past 12 months.
  • Ever engaged in "high-risk" behavior or have had intimate contact with anyone at risk for AIDS
  • Been pregnant in the past six weeks

In General, Every Blood Donors Must:

  • Weigh at least 110 pounds
  • Be at least 18 years of age
  • Be feeling well and healthy for the past 3 days
  • Have NOT received a tattoo on Okinawa in the past 12 months
  • Have NOT been to the Korean DMZ in the past 24 months which includes the DMZ tour.

To ensure the safety of blood donation for both the donor and the recipient, all volunteers must abide by the eligibility requirement. Every volunteer who signed up to donate blood will be evaluated to determine to be eligible for blood donation. The final determination will take place at the blood drive.
